What are free weights, and why should you use them?
Free weights are movable fitness equipment not attached to a machine. This includes dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, and weight plates.
I like to add both free weights and some machine exercises into my sessions with clients and also my own training as they offer a wide range of benefits for all types of training goals.
Some benefits:
Joint Health-
It promotes more natural movement patterns that can reduce the risk of any joint issues that some people face with using fixed position machines.
Coordination and Balance-
You have to engage more muscles in order to control the weight you are using. This will improve overall stability and balance, compared to machines which provide more support.
Functional Strength-
Mimics real-life movements which will enhance performance in everyday tasks and sports.
Versatile-
Suitable for various exercises that makes them suitable for several different training goals.
Core Activation-
The core is the main stabiliser for the majority of free weight exercises which helps to improve overall core strength. This is essential for posture and balance.
Space Efficiency-
You can easily set up a workout in a smaller area so it’s great to use if you are new to the gym or have limited space.
