Women’s strength training

The number of women participating in strength training is increasing slowly and more women are starting earlier! A lot of women still believe that cardio is best and they are worried of getting too “bulky”. Although cardio is great and will help you lose weight you aren’t building any muscle or strength.

Strength training is known to have a variety of benefits to both the body and mind. These benefits are especially important for women to utilise from all ages and even better to start earlier! Below are some of the reasons why women should add strength training into their routine:

Physical:

  1. Increases muscle mass and strength

  2. Bone Health:

    • Strengthens bones and increases density, reducing osteoporosis risk.

  3. Boosts metabolism:

    • aids in weight management and fat loss.

  4. Improves cardiovascular health:

    • Lowers blood pressure and improves cholesterol levels.

  5. Better posture and balance:

    • Strengthens core and back muscles

Mental:

  1. Releases endorphins to enhance your mood

  2. Boosts confidence:

    • Achieving your goals will help to improve self-esteem and body image.

  3. Stress relief:

    • It’s a great way to switch off from everyday life

Specific benefits for different stages of life:

  1. Young Women:

    • Establishes healthy habits and reduces risks of injury

    • It’s especially beneficial to support any participation in sport

  2. Pregnant women:

    • Eases pregnancy-related discomfort and speeds postpartum recovery

  3. Postmenopausal Women:

    • Improves bone density to maintain strong bones which is important as women are more at risk of developing osteoporosis
